Motivation to move your body in 2021

Conscious Body

We all fall off the training wagon from time to time. But it is how many times you dust yourself off and get back on the horse that counts. Training isn’t about being the best, it is about being better than you were yesterday. You against yourself. Moving for yourself.

I hope these tips below help you to re-discover and hold on to your training mojo going into 2021!

1. Set goals

This is a biggie. Make them realistic and achievable.

You want to gain muscle? List the smaller goals it will take to get you there:

  • Build up to 3-4 strength sessions a week
  • 100kg deadlift in 6 months
  • Focus on nutrition with weekly meal prepping
  • Book in monthly massages

It is also important to remember that after a period of rest that you don’t make it your mission to smash yourself with 5 sessions a week from the start. Take it easy and seek advice from experts on how to return to training safely to avoid injury and burn out.

Remember: You don’t have to be extreme, you just have to be consistent.

2. Choose a form of training that you actually enjoy!

Sounds straightforward enough right? If you move your body the way you want, and the way you love, it’ll be much easier to show up! Not a fan of pounding the pavement? Join a gym! Not into lifting weights? Get bendy with some yoga or Pilates. Keep trying different forms of exercise until you find something you enjoy.

And don’t feel like you have to stick to something for a certain period of time. If you join a gym and after a few months it really isn’t your jam, then go on the search for something else that lights you up.

3. Accountability is everything!

Rope in a friend or co-worker to train with you. Make friends at the gym to check in with. Or ask your coach for some extra support – that is what they are there for after all!

If you are not able to find any accountability in this way, maybe think about trying another form of exercise where you can find the spark again and have the opportunity to meet some new people. What I have found over the years is that the community vibe is everything! If the people you train with fun to be around, you will find it easy to bound out of bed at 5am each morning to join them for a sweat session!

Remember: It’s not how many times you fall but how many times you get back up again!

4. Body is a temple

What I mean by this is: Don’t put pressure on your physical body to perform if you are not prepared to care and support it to do so.

By care and support I mean: nutrition, hydration and rest. Listening to the whispers of your body before it screams.

“One body, one life’ has been a mantra of mine for years. It is the only body we get so treat it with the respect it deserves.

This is where it is important to look at your goals. If you don’t have time to ensure your nutrition and hydration is a priority you may need to back off the intensity or volume of your training to avoid burn out and falling off the wagon.

5. Be kind to yourself

Remember that every workout you do is progress!

Listening to your body and what it needs is self care.

If life throws you some curve balls, work gets crazy or your kids are sick, surrender and take some time off. The time away quite often can do us the world of good!

6. Write down why you love to move!

This list can be a handy one to refer to when you can feel your mojo slipping away!

  • I will feel happier
  • I will be one workout closer to my goal
  • I will want to nourish my body with healthy foods
  • I will have more energy for whatever today throws at me
  • I will be more motivated to move again tomorrow
  • I will sleep better tonight
  • I will feel more confident
  • I will be making some time for me

I hope this blog post has helped you to regain some motivation to get moving again! Set your goals, be realistic, find something you love to do, share that love with others, and be kind to YOU! And remember to move your body because you love it, not because you hate it.
