Meditation. What is all the fuss about?

Conscious Mind

I have dipped my toe in and out of meditation over the years and it has never stuck. Until 2020. For many of us, 2020 has been the year of huge growth and change. It has been the cracking open and putting back together. Back in June 2020 I made the commitment to daily meditation and I haven’t looked back. Even just 5 minutes of peaceful mediating is enough to bring me back to the present feeling happier and calmer to take on the days tasks.

So what is it exactly?

“Meditation can be defined as the practice of focusing one’s mind to achieve stillness and tranquillity. The point of this is to achieve a state of relaxation, inner calm, and spiritual transcendence.

That is it, in a nutshell. When you meditate, in whatever way, shape, or form you choose to do so, you are trying to reach a particular state where you mind is totally blank. You’re not thinking about anything at all.

There are no worries about the day ahead or the day gone by, no random thoughts, no list of errands to run, absolutely nothing.

There is a reason why many people advocate meditation for spiritual purposes and that’s because when you reach that completely calm state of mind, that is where the magic happens.”

Why should you jump on the bandwagon?

So now you know the benefits, where to next?

Just start. I use the InsightTimer app daily. Find a phone app that you love. Buy a book on meditation to learn more. Listen to podcasts. Just start.

So you have started, but your just not feeling it? My advice is to give it time. Consistency and showing up daily for yourself is key. Start to build it into your daily routine and I can assure you the benefits will quickly start to take affect. Below are some tips that might help you as you are starting out:

Space. Find yourself and comfortable and quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.

Posture. Sit on the floor or on a straight backed chair. If you are just starting out and find those positions uncomfortable, lay on your bed or on the floor instead.

Just breath. Take deep slow breaths, and send them down into your belly.

Thoughts. Your thoughts will be a little all over the place. This is normal. Simply acknowledge that thought and bring your focus back to your breath.

Time. Just start. Start with 5 minutes and build it up from there.

I hope this blog post has helped you in some small way. Starting something new can sometimes be a little daunting. “Progress over perfection” is a mantra I live by. Just start showing up, make it a priority, and show yourself kindness and compassion on the days life gets in the way. Tomorrow is always a new day.

Much love,

Courtney x
